The Rise of Unlimited Data Plans: Verizon Joins the Battle with New Offer

1 min read

Verizon is reintroducing an unlimited data plan, starting on Monday, offering customers unlimited data, talk, and text for $80. This plan also includes up to 10 GB of mobile hotspot usage, as well as calling and texting to Mexico and Canada. Customers can stream unlimited HD video, unlike T-Mobile’s practice of lowering video quality for some unlimited data customers. However, after using 22 GB of data in a billing cycle, customers may experience slower speeds during network congestion.

Verizon had previously eliminated its unlimited usage plan in 2011, following other major wireless carriers. Many companies have since brought back unlimited plans, including Verizon which introduced a “Safety Mode” plan last summer that provided access to unlimited data but at reduced speeds. AT&T also eliminated overage fees and throttles speeds once the data limit is reached.

Competitors like T-Mobile and Sprint have introduced their own versions of “unlimited data” plans to attract customers. Sprint offers unlimited talk, text, and high-speed data for $60 for the first line, with additional lines costing $40 and $30 each, up to 10 lines. T-Mobile’s plan charges $70 for the first line, $50 for the second, and $20 for additional lines, up to eight lines.
